Example.

Let’s say we have a sample of substance X, and we want to calculate the energy change in joules when 25 thermochemical calories are released during a chemical reaction involving substance X.

Let’s use the formula: E_(J) = 4,184 × E_(calth) = 25 thermochemical calories * 4.184 joules/thermochemical calorie = 104.6 joules

15°C Calories to Joules

1 cal₁₅ = 4,1855 J

The amount of energy measured in joules E_(J) can be determined by multiplying the energy measured in calories at 15°C E_(cal15) by a factor of 4.1855:

E_(J) = 4.1855 × E_(cal15)

Example.

Convert 400 cal₁₅ to joules.

E_(J) = 4,1855 * 400cal₁₅ = 1674.2 J

Large/Food Calories to Joules

1 Cal = 1 kcal = 4,184 kJ = 4184 J

Example.
