Basic Information About Units

Kilowatt

The watt (W) is the power which in one second gives rise to energy of 1 joule (J). Consequently, 1 kW = 1000 W = 1000 J / 1s.

Horsepower

Horsepower (hp) is a unit of measurement of power, or the rate at which work is done. It is commonly used to describe the power of engines in vehicles, machines, and even electric motors.

There are several types of horsepower:

  • Imperial/mechanical horsepower (Php(I)): Commonly used in the automotive industry, defined as 745.7 watts or 33,000 ft·lbf/min.
  • Electrical horsepower (Php(E)): Used for electric motors and air conditioning systems, equal to 746 watts.
  • Metric horsepower (Php(M)): Used mainly in Europe, defined as 735.5 watts or 98.6% of an imperial horsepower.
  • Boiler horsepower (Php(S)): Used for rating steam boilers, where one boiler horsepower equals 9.8095 kilowatts.

Conversion Formulas

Kilowatts to Imperial/Mechanical Horsepower

To convert kilowatts (kW) to imperial/mechanical horsepower (hp(I)):

Php(I) = P(kW) / 0,745699872 = 1.341 * P(kW)

Example.

A water pump is rated at 75 kilowatts (kW) of power output. To calculate the equivalent horsepower (hp), you can use the conversion factor of 1 kW = 1.341 hp. Therefore, Php(I) = 75 × 1.341 hp = 100.575 hp.

Kilowatts to Electrical Horsepower

To convert kilowatts (kW) to electrical horsepower (hp(E)):

Php(E) = P(kW) / 0,746 = 1.34048 * P(kW)

Example.

An industrial electric motor is rated at 22 kilowatts (kW) of power input. To calculate the equivalent horsepower (hp), you can use the conversion factor of 1 kW = 1.34048 hp. Therefore, Php(E) = 22 × 1.34048 hp = 29.491 hp.

Kilowatts to Metric Horsepower

To convert kilowatts (kW) to metric horsepower (hp(M)):

Php(M) = P(kW) / 0,73549875 = 1.3596 * P(kW)

Example.

Converting 15 kW to netric horsepower.

Php(M) = P(kW) / 0,73549875 = 20.394 hp

Kilowatts to Boiler Horsepower

To convert kilowatts (kW) to boiler horsepower (hp(S)):

Php(S) = P(kW) / 9.8095

Example.

Converting 10 kW to Boiler Horsepower.

Php(S) = 10 / 9.8095 = 1.0194 hp
